Sacks Volunteer Positions:
While the Donations and Clothes Hanging departments are in many ways the heart and soul of Sacks’ daily operations, we also have a great need for volunteer services throughout the store. You’ll have the option of training for and moving to a new assignment after you’ve completed twenty hours hanging clothes or sorting donations.
Some of the other assignments include, but aren’t limited to:
Some of the other assignments include, but aren’t limited to:
Accessories: This department includes purses, belts, ties, socks, etc.—the fun stuff that makes an outfit “pop”!
Books: We sell all genres of books including children’s, romance, best sellers, non-fiction and literary fiction. Collector books (limited edition, first edition, rare books) are often sold online or through a silent auction
Clothes: Clothes are our most common donation and our biggest money-maker. As such, we devote the most floor space to them. The entire clothing department is made up of various sections, including: Kids, Happenin’, Vintage, High End, Sports, Men’s (pants, coats, shirts, etc.), and Women’s (pants, skirts, dresses, shirts, etc.), maternity, and undergarments. We devote a lot of people power to sorting, hanging, tagging, sizing, and pricing clothes, as well as a lot of time to placing the clothes on the floor and making sure they are displayed as best as possible. We use a color-coded system of hangers as well as a color-code system of tagging once items are placed on the floor. These systems help ensure items stay in their designated section and that items are not on the floor for more than a month.
Computers and Electronics: All computer hard drives are “cleaned” of unnecessary information before being put up for sale. We attempt to make complete packages out of what we can: monitor, tower, printer and accessories. We sell all computers/computer parts and accessories on an as-is basis, though all are tested for adequate performance before being put up for sale. Electronics contains a wide variety of items: computers, TVs, video players, radios, stereos, video games, musical equipment, and any associated pluggable accessories, etc.
Domestics: Domestics includes pretty much any household items that are made out of fabric or yarn (i.e. curtains, bed linens, table cloths, blankets, pillows, rugs, tablecloths, needlepoint, yarn, quilting pieces, sewing supplies, etc).
Donations: This is the center of operations for Sacks in that it is where we receive all our goods, determine which goods we can accept and which we have to turn away, and where we sort acceptable goods according to their final destinations (i.e. Shoes, Housewares, or Books. etc).
Furniture: Due to sheer size of items, this department demands a significant amount of floor space. As long as we get clean, unbroken, quality furniture this department can make substantial income. Common items include couches, various tables, chairs, and entertainment centers.
Housewares: Housewares is our second largest income generator. While we do sell everyday items such as mugs, glass vases, place settings, and silverware, we are particularly dedicated to keeping the section stocked with quality goods and collectibles—fine china, stemware, Hummel, etc. Also included in this department are: VHS tapes, DVDs, posters, pictures and anything to decorate a house. Our insistence on keeping shelves clean and dust-free and in presenting an uncluttered display is a major asset to sales.
Jewelry: Jewelry is a tedious job that takes a fair amount of patience to determine quality, to fix, clean and to price. This department is quite popular and the merchandise moves quickly. Speed, a meticulous nature, and an eye for presentation are important qualities for making this department successful.
Records: Records are making a come-back! They are cool, hip and fun. However, because of this, we do not receive a ton of them. It is important to take care of the ones we have and display them well. The process is simple, but the impact is tremendous.
Register: The register is staffed by one person (except for two on half-price Saturdays when there are two registers in place) and should never be left unattended. Staff is responsible for the accurate deposit of daily sales. If sales are slow, it is common for the person on register to handle other departments (i.e. processing shoes or accessories) while waiting for customers. This is often the first and last person the customer sees when coming to Sacks, and as such a positive, friendly and welcoming attitude can go a long way.
Shoes: We sell all styles and sizes of shoes – from outdoor to dress and everything in between. The only requirement being that they are in good condition (soles are not over-worn, insides only gently worn, and exteriors are relatively clean).
Sports Equipment: Sports equipment is a fun department consisting of anything and everything one can play outside; from skis to rafts, from tents to kneepads. Every seasonal outdoor activity is found here. The department fluctuates with the season and price corresponds to the quality. When working in this department, it is imperative that one knows a great deal about outdoor sports.
